Therapist
I’m Emily, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). I am passionate about working with children, teens, college students, and parents to overcome challenges to living a fulfilling life. Learning about ourselves and trying new things can be a difficult yet rewarding process. It would be my privilege to walk alongside you or your child on this journey. Whether through play therapy or talk therapy, my hope is to provide a respectful and supportive space to help you or your loved one with whatever concern brings you here. I want to help you feel empowered and cared for during the counseling process.
Education
I earned my Bachelors of Science (B.S.) degree in Psychology at the University of Georgia with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. I continued my studies at the University of Georgia, earning a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Counseling. Working with kids has always been my passion, and I have completed advance training as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT).
Counseling Experience
My approach to counseling is client-centered and strengths based. I help people identify personal strengths and resources to build confidence and foster personal growth. While working in non-profit community and private practice settings, I gained valuable experience working with children and families. I provided individual and family counseling for children in foster care at a family services center. Additionally, I facilitated social skills groups for children and teens struggling with issues with anger, anxiety and peer relationships. In private practice, I have used creative approaches to help children, teens and young adults heal from trauma, anxiety and depression. I have also led Positive Discipline workshops to support parents.
Specialties
Although I work with all ages, I have a special interest and advanced training in helping children, teens and college students. For younger children, I use Adlerian Play Therapy techniques to help them heal and develop new skills to cope with their world. Play is the language of children and allows them to process difficult experiences and big feelings. You can learn more about play therapy here.
For older children, teens and adults, I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address issues with anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem, and life changes. If you or your loved one has experienced trauma, I am a Certified Child and Adolescent Trauma Therapist (CATP) and can provide Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) to promote healing.
Because supporting families is essential to helping children, I also support parents who might be feeling overwhelmed. I am a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator and can provide customized parent coaching services. I also facilitate Positive Discipline workshops from time to time.
Helping people who are coping with chronic illness is a cause very close to my heart. I volunteer with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and co-facilitate support groups. Each summer I work with the camper support team at Camp Oasis, a camp for kids and teens with Crohn’s, Colitis, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Whether it is adjusting to a new diagnosis or a flare-up of symptoms, physical health concerns affect mental health. Learning how to take care of your mental health, while not feeling well physically, can be a daunting challenge. I strive to provide understanding and hope for those struggling with the obstacles that accompany chronic illness. Interests
Outside of the office, I enjoy reading and getting outside, even if it is just sitting by a pool! I like hiking in North Georgia when the weather is nice. I am a huge Georgia Bulldawgs fan, but I do like to watch other college football games even if UGA isn’t playing.
