You’re a college student and your first semester didn’t quite go how you hoped it would. You are doing well in college, but know you could do SO much better, but how? You’re feeling the pressure to get good grades in college and achieve lofty goals.

As a young adult therapist, I work with college students on how to become the best version of themselves. Even if your first semester wasn’t what you hoped it would be, you can turn things around! Here are my top tips on starting your second semester strong.
Tips From a Young Adult Therapist in Roswell, GA for College Students to Succeed in the Second Semester:
Baby Steps
New Year’s Resolution time has recently passed. Now we’re all looking back thinking “Why did I set such high goals for myself? I’ll never reach them.” You’ve already abandoned your goals for 2022 and are skating by, hoping to do the best you can. The best time to turn this ship around is now!
First of all, you CAN do this. The key to making changes and doing things in a different way is to take one tiny step at a time. Even if you only study for 5 minutes longer every week, that adds up over time. You will find yourself performing better on tests. Plus, feeling more confident in coursework.
Massive change doesn’t happen overnight. The best way to see exponential growth in your life is to take the next baby step towards your goal. Even if it seems much too small. These small steps lead to great leaps over time.
Progress over Perfection
Deep breath. I know this one is difficult to hear. You aren’t going to do everything in a perfect way, and putting pressure on yourself to do so is, well, hurtful. Aim for progress over perfection. Going from a C average to a 4.0 in one semester may be too much to ask. But going from a C average to a B average? That you can do! You’re dealing with a LOT as a college student during covid. Online classes, worrying about your health and safety and that of loved ones, and adding the pressure to put on a happy face are more than many can handle. Aim for progress over perfection. This one shift in thinking can have a huge impact on your mental well-being.
The Thought Trap
It’s so easy to get caught up in your thoughts; to find yourself going down the rabbit hole of “not enough-ness.” The pressure from your parents and society to succeed is too much to handle right now. Or, you may find you can’t find the oomph to study like you “should.”
No matter what thoughts are swirling around, you deserve confidence as a young adult. There are times when life is so big and such a burden that you need to reach out and get help. This may be a heart-to-heart with a good friend or a call home to a parent. Or, if it’s time for counseling as a college student, it’s important to take the next step and reach out to a young adult therapist. Do what you need to do to get in a healthier headspace.
